Careful of Unknown Links in Messaging

Written by Saran on January 30, 2007

Trojans hacks and worms can easily enter a person’s computer by a mere click of a link. Instant messaging, the new trend in adhering towards faster and easier communication anywhere in the world has been enhanced thoroughly, going to the extent of allowing links to be followed, sometimes generated automatically from infected computers. Such are done even when offline messages are left, such as in Yahoo Messenger issues.

Instant Messages

The best way to avoid such links is to refrain from clicking on links without prior notice from the actual user. While most people would rely heavily on the level of relationship that they would have with their online buddy, it is still best to double check and verify before proceeding on the site link.

Being infected is quite painful that it leads to even formatting the entire system. This holds true for people who are not aware or have the time to clean it manually and methodically. Hence, the best way is to be more cautious, especially when peculiar links are met.

Phishing for Personal Information

Written by Saran on January 26, 2007

Phishing over the web can be typified with that of trying to get personal information for mischievous use. Receiving unsolicited emails coming from unknown origins which would make you believe that you have won something in a lottery or a sweepstakes contest are the common forms of phishing.

Gone Phishing

The people who send you these emails are merely after your personal information. They would get information such as credit card numbers, bank accounts, and other useful information to which they can use over the web, an open space of being able to transact with a lot of security breaches that most people know today.

Some would even provide links to certain pages which are professionally done, all the more deceiving a person that the offer is for real. But the next time you get such e-mails from an unknown source, all you have to do is just think about it for a second. How can you get such mails from someone or something that you don’t even remember joining? The rest is history.

Putting Up Fences from Internet Spyware and Trojans

Written by Saran on January 24, 2007

Harmful objects can be obtained from the web. We are all aware that Malware and Trojans are rampant objects that have been wandering of anywhere on the Internet, especially websites that are often visited by people for reference and information. Such sites would get hijacked and also contaminate visiting users as well, something that can be done through Internet cookies stored on the web folder in the machines.

Picket Fences on the Web

While developers and security administrators have religiously searched for ways to find such solutions, the ever changing development of new threats coming from the Internet has been far from over. To date, even the well-protected workstations can still be penetrated by objects that are not immediately visible.

Internet fences in the form of firewalls and software protection templates have tried to stop such intrusions but need to be updated frequently to answer the related threats. Without such temporary fences that are up, workstations are sitting ducks waiting to be shot, and if web administrators are not up to date with the new threats, the fences used are good as gone once they occur.

Password Protection for Word and Excel

Written by Saran on January 22, 2007

For confidential files that people would want to be kept at maximum security, applying passwords to ensure that only proper personnel will be able to open them has been the regular exercise for basic security measures. Among the usual files that would require such security levels are that of payrolls, business plans, and management projections and outlook, a lot of which are kept in safe storage to avoid people and competitors from planning to gain access to them.

Password Protection on Word and Excel

Payrolls, especially for people who are at higher levels are usually restricted materials. The only person allowed to access them would usually be the finance, personnel and upper management honchos. In organizations, curiosity and challenge are the usual culprits for people to try and crack the passwords. However, if they are already under wraps and given advanced warnings, access can be limited and contained so that they would not even entertain the thought of doing such mischief which will not do them any good anyway.

Data Recovery and Restoration

Written by Saran on January 20, 2007

Most databases are usually backed-up at certain scheduled times, largely due to avoid possible data corruption stemming from system crashes. It is best to back-up regularly and store them in another external storage data, usually in the from of back-up tapes or compact discs, so that historical data can be rolled back towards the actual time where the data had been stored.

Periodical Data Back Ups

Ideally, people who are not in business would not resort to data back-ups regularly. The degree of importance of certain documents may not be as essential compared to that of business entities. The importance of archiving pertinent documents would not usually be realized unless they really find themselves on the spot.

It is true that people will only heed warnings once they have actually occurred. But to people who have already been through this process would agree that it provides more discomfort and problems rather than being at ease when such unforeseen events would take place.

Firewalls and Wide Area Network (WAN ) Intrusions

Written by Saran on January 18, 2007

Experiencing connection problems and slow transfer of data may occur at any given time for most networks. While most would immediately identify the network cards, computers, cabling or network configuration at first, the presence of unknown processes of the operating system or possible intrusions such as DOS or Ping attacks can also be considered as possible factors for the deteriorating speed issues for network administrators.

Firewalls

Such instances are only normal, especially for wide area networks, or networks exposed to the Internet. The mischief caused by such people can be expected, especially for people who love to try their talent in hacking and network intrusions. The prize of which is that of creating discomfort and headaches for companies that thrive on networks for business and profit.

While there are network monitors available, it would be best to get the best firewall software there is today. Some do not value the firewalls and their use until such issues arise, but just like the war on terrorism, it would be best to take on security measures before they occur to avoid bigger problems once their mischief succeeds.

Unveiling Operating System Secrets

Written by Saran on January 16, 2007

The complete commands and processes to which a computer operates cannot be covered in a day nor will be remembered in one sitting. Ideally, only the important things for consideration such as that of user friendly commands to allow proper interface between the computer and the user behind the keyboard will always be the only know-how that would remain.

Computer Secrets

Computer operating systems such as Linux and Windows offer a wide variety of benefits for people, especially in maximizing the capabilities of a computer and the installed software. Speed and reliability are among the important aspects that computer owner will always want and to be able to perform them, proper identification and references would need to be researched on.

It is a given that most people would not spend time studying all the aspects of a computer system. However, there will be instances when such accidental discoveries from exploring the computer operating system and its resources would ignite interest and push a person into further exploring information surrounding the issue and perhaps look at other benefits that operating systems provide but are not given much attention.

The Penetration of LCD Monitors in the Technology Market

Written by Saran on January 14, 2007

The cost for owning LCD monitors today have severely been lowered, putting into peril the usual CRT monitors known as the bulky packaged ones that are usually partnered with a desktop system. While the CRT series have gone as far as widening their screens towards the 19” Flat Screen monitor, from all indications, everyone will be leaning more towards a space consuming and screen optimized LCD monitor regardless of its screen width.

LCD Monitors

Such was forthcoming. In its initial introduction to the market, a lot of people were hesitant due to the astronomical price that it was pegged at. But like all competing products, once the competition sets in, the need to adjust the price to be competitive in the market is a must. Thus, such a trend can be seen with the large drop in the price of LCD monitors such as Samsung and LG Collins, two players who are not really tagged to be in the line of Viewsonic and AOC.

As it stands, the final decision would be left on the price and the screen resolution as required. For people who are simply wanting to get in with the times, this is certainly welcome news for the lower costing manufacturers who aim to satisfy the need for LCD monitors, regardless if this is just for personal satisfaction or not.

Hiding Identities Online

Written by Saran on January 12, 2007

For bloggers and writers, using pen names has been a normal scenario, some of which who would want to keep their identities apart for privacy reasons. While some would not care and would want to gain the due recognition for their work, it entirely depends on what the blog or composition is all about.

Hiding your Identity

Privacy over the Internet is only normal. Who would want to be cited for something which may become a means of ruining their reputation online? Risky is the right term for most people, but upon voicing opinions, making a stand and living by what you believe in despite what critics may eventually say is something that people would want to be known for.

For sure, this may draw varied criticisms and comments, but the bottom line of it all is that it depends on how daring a person can get and up to what extent he is willing to push himself.
